You Did It! Results of the Strength & Hope Campaign

The Strength & Hope Campaign, benefiting The Breast Cancer Research Foundation^® (BCRF), came to an end on August 31. Thanks to Stampin Up deomonstrators and customers who supported this global philanthropic campaign. Each of you did your part to make a difference, and by doing so, we raised nearly $60,000 USD, which will go toward helping BCRF "achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime" (BCRF Mission Statement). Again, thank you for living Stampin' Up!'s Statement of the Heart and doing your part to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

The strength and hop stamp set and campaign is over now, but if you are interested, there is a lovely ribbon stamp available for only $9.95, which you can make some beautiful cards with, as well as items for fundraisers.

These cellophane treat bags are perfect for halloween giveaway treats, or for any other occasion of party. They are also known as "m&m bags," because you can line up coloured m&ms or smarties to match your theme. Different colours of jelly belly beans are nice too, and you can fit more in the bag than the bigger regular jelly beans I used. We used the decorative label punch and the small oval punch to make the shapes, plus a small hand cut green stem. We sponged orange ink to give it a bit of dimension, and used smooch spritz when it was done for some shine. I also stapled the bag to the label punch, before putting the pumpkin over top, just to make it extra sturdy, because I don't think regular glue would hold up all the candy! Spooky Owl

Here is a fun card, based on a design I found online, for a very spooky looking punch art owl. He is a bit smaller than a regular sized card, but bigger than a tag, and certainly you could alter the piece sizes to make any size you wanted. He is very sparkly! I used 3 different sized circle punches for the eyes, and 3 layers of scalloped edge punched black card stock for his feathered body. Boo!

mmmm.... Spice Cake.

APPLE SPICE CAKE

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, softened
2 cups white sugar
4 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon warm water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 apples - peeled, cored and chopped
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup confectioners' sugar for dusting

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a 10 inch tube pan. Cover raisins with warm water, let soak for 10 minutes and then drain. Whisk together flour, spices, and salt. Set aside.
Cream together butter or margarine and sugar. Mix in eggs and vanilla. Stir together soda and 1 tablespoon warm water, and mix into the sugar mixture. Stir in flour mixture, apples, and strained raisins until well blended. Pour batter into prepared pan.
Bake for approximately 1 hour, or until a tester comes out clean. Cool in pan. Once cool, shake pan to loosen cake. Turn onto plate, and dust with confectioners' sugar.

Have you ever tried crafting with your computer? Its easier than you think! My personal favourite is making photobooks, because nowadays all my photos are on my computer anyways. I also like editing photos of my son and adding embellishments and words directly to the photos themselves, then I get them printed inexpensively and hand them out to adoring relatives. You can also make greeting cards and calendars... really, its just as endless are traditional crafting. Also what is really popular is "hybrid" crafting, where you design part of your project online, print it, then finish it off with real embellishments. You could make a digital card, then print it out and add some ribbon and buttons. Voila! This is a great way to expand your stamp collection, because you can buy the Stampin Up stamp images online cheaper, rather than buying a set that you will rarely use.

I use mine for scoring plain cardstock to make up lots of blank cards that fold in half. I also use it for any sort of 3 dimensional box or container. This time I have an altered journal to show you, but of course it would be equally lovely as a card. This sample is a scrapbook page, which is something I don't show too often on my website, but that's all about to change! I know its totally unrelated to craftiness, but I have been trying to be more thrifty lately, now that I am a stay at home Mom and our income is reduced. Not to mention for a shop-a-holic like me, there is a certain thrill to getting a good deal.... and more money saved means more money for stamps! I thought I would start by sharing my haul this evening, and some basic tips.

First, you need to get your stash of coupons started. Pick up coupons in-store, in flyers, in newspapers, ones that are included with samples and other products, and ones you can order online. Here are the free coupon sites I order from:

Once you have a stock of coupons, you need to match them up with sales in order to get the best deals. Here are a couple of good basic ones I got tonight, which you can totally do yourself:

I got a big box of Pampers diapers on sale at Wal-mart, and used 2 coupons, one for $4 off when you buy wipes AND diapers, which I combined with a small travel pack of wipes for the regular price of only $2.97, so I got those free plus a dollar off my diapers, combined with another $2 off coupon for the diapers as well. Not the super greatest deal in the universe, but still pretty darn good!

My biggest deal was at Shopper's Drug Mart: Small bottle of Tylenol for regular price $5.99, plus a $5 off coupon, so only $0.99. This could have been a better deal if I had waited for a sale on a bigger bottle, but we needed the medicine so I didn't want to wait. The best deal of all came from a Johnson & Johnson coupon you have to email and request, which I used for an Aveeno gift box worth $30.99!!

Don't try to do complicated transactions during peak busy hours, and be nice to your cashier!
Don't try and be a crazy extreme couponer and clear out the shelves.... its not fair to everyone else who want to get a good deal too, not to mention hoarding toothpaste is just plain weird.
Do start up your coupon "stash" and try to bring them with you for when you see an unadvertised clearance item, because that is often when you can get the best deals.
Don't buy anything you don't need just because its on sale or a good deal, because even if its not much money, its still adds up to wasted cash.

Another button themed club card

Here is a fun style of card I made for my club class, using the big shot to make a flower, and some sewing themed designer paper. The small buttom stamp in the corner is the only stamping in this card, but sometimes its nice to let the fancy paper shine. The pull tab at the top is easily made using the round tab punch. This card style is great for invitations, and when I alter it to be longer and more rectangular, also the style I use for my gift certificates. If you ever want to order one, I can make them in any amount, and I promise they will always come in a pretty card like this, ready for gift giving!

Club project: the hardest button to button

This card was one I whipped up for our club meetings, which is similar to my swap cards, but uses a different technique I like... By stamping onto the white background first, then running it through the Big Shot polka dot embossing folder after, it creates a textured, "how-did-you-do-that?" look that is really fun. I used some non-stamping up embroidery thread instead of ribbon, because I love how it matches Melon Mambo, and it goes with the button theme. The new Summer Mini actually now carries baker's twine, which is almost the same, in different colours, which I LOVE!

Death By Chocolate Trifle

By request, an easy, yummy, and impressive dessert!

Lana's Death by Chocolate Trifle

For best results prepare the night before or a minimum of three hours before you want to eat, to give flavours a chance to mellow.

1 box brownie mix1 large box chocolate pudding
3 skor chocolate bars
1 tub Cool Whip
1/2 cup Kahlua or strong brewed coffee
1 small container chocolate mini cream puffs (fresh in the bakery section or frozen)

Directions:

1. Prepare brownie mix as directed. Cool in pan, then cube into 1 inch chunks.
2. Crush your skor bars (I double seal mine in ziploc bags and hit them with a hammer).
3. Prepare chocolate pudding as directed.
4. In a trifle dish or other straight sided bowl, layer ingredients as follows: one third cake chunks, coffee, pudding, cool whip, skor bars, and repeat 2 more times, topping the finished trifle with cream puffs.
5. Refrigerate and enjoy!

Here is a product that Stampin' Up introdiced last year, that I wanted to mention. Smooch spritz comes in a tube, and I have used it in the past to add a little glam sparkle over my completed projects, but at our Vancouver Regional I learned a new trick I hadn't heard of before. You can use smooch spritz directly onto your stamps! Completely cover your image, like you would with regular ink, then stamp away! This gives your stamped image a pearly and sparkly look, which is especially nice for backgrounds. And of course, the medallion stamp is my number one favourite stamp in the entire catalogue!

Sorry for my unexpecting blogging vacation! Sometimes it just seems like you lose your crafting mojo, and it takes some time to get back in the saddle. But I am back and full of stuff to show you!

I learned a new trick at the Vancouver Regional that I want to share, because it is so simple, but I hadn't really thought to do it before. When you have a set with lots of pieces, you can line them up on the clear block and use them all at once as a background stamp! The card below was stamped with versamark ink and heat embossed with clear embossing powder. This sure beats stamping each button individually, which is another bonus of using clear stamps!

Swapsies!

Here is the swap card I made for the Vancouver Regional. I used the Button Button set from the Spring Mini, and the In Colours cardstock and ink. I also popped out 2 of the buttons on dimensionals, and glazed them with liquid lacquer, to try and make them more like real buttons. The background cardstock is embossed with polka dots. You can still the line up of all 45 swaps I made, all ready to go! And look, at the regional, I am famous! Ha, not really... all the swaps were posted for Shelly to pick her favourites to win a prize. Mine didn't win, but its still cool seeing it displayed. I got lots of good swaps in return which I can't wait to show you.

And this card is my favourite one! I love the colour combo of Melon Mambo and Bermuda Bay together. Its just so happy! I bought the "on a pedestal" set specifically for my birthday stamp-a-stack, and I am pleased how much I love it! You never really know when you buy a set how much use you will truly get out of it, but this one is definitely a keeper for me. And using the markers directly on the stamp is a fun and easy technique for newbie stampers and oldies alike!

Birthday Stamp-A-Stack is over...

... but I am cooking up some fun ideas for for some future workshops! Ever wonder what the set up is like for my events? Every demonstrator does it differently, but I thought I would show you how I do it.

First I like to have a package for each participant, with their name on it, stamped to match our theme (this time its birthdays!). Inside the large envelope is the latest mini catalogue, some business cards, and an instructional booklet that shows step-by-step how to make each card. This way when you get home you don't have to think, "how the heck did I do that again??" and there is a detailed list of everything we used in case you want to order anything that you liked. In this case there is also a metal tin to hold our finished card set, and enough envelopes for every card we made.

Scissors and glue are in the middle of the table, as well as pretzels (the perfect little snack that doesn't get your hands too messy!). Catalogues and card samples are laid out by the couches to peruse as well.

All the supplies for each card are in separate baggies, and we go through and make each card together, with breaks for goodies and draw prizes. Good times were had by all!

Clearance Rack is still going strong...

Did you know that Stampin' Up has an online clearance section? Things change, reappear, and disappear on a daily basis, so I always try to check regularly. The best deals are usually for ribbon, but since the "colour renovation" last year, there have been some periodic amazing deals where they are getting rid of stock that now contains discontinued colours. I had to let you guys know that they have added the Stampin Pastels back onto the Clearance Rack, and its a screaming good deal for only $12.49! I love mine. There are lots of techniques you can use them for, like with a paintbrush like watercolours, or with a sponge dauber, or my favourite, with a blender pen. Here is a card I designed for a swap that I ended up missing the meeting for, so sad! It uses the delightful decorations stamp set, and matching ornament punch. I love using them together for cards and tags, its so quick and easy! The striped paper is the Candy Cane Christmas Specialty Designer Series Paper, which comes pre-sparkly for you, which is also a card-making (and gluey fingers) time saver. The red snowflakes were made with the northern flurries embossing folder, then cut out with the top note die cut, on my Big Shot.

This is a gorgeous card I made at my upline meeting, with the Christmas Mini hostess set. My favourite part is the shabby chic speckled look that was made with the colour spritzer tool. It just goes to show how important demonstrations are, because I would have never thought to purchase one, if I hadn't tried it at our meeting! Now it is definitely added to my wish list. So easy and fun, all you do is hook up any colour of marker, and squeeze away!

A Special Christmas Card

This card was made with a retired set of the nativity scene, that a dear friend bought at a workshop I hosted, years before I became a demonstrator! She tried to give it back to me, still unopened, but in trade I said I would make her a free set of Christmas cards with the stamp set, so she would at use get some use out of it. I was particularly proud of my design, since it looks like the stable. The image is heat embossed with gold embossing powder, and the paper is real red and chocolate chip card stock. The stable overhang is popped out with dimensionals.

Holiday Mini Review: Another fabric project!

Here is a gorgeous project using our new designer fabric, for all you sewers out there.... I know there are lots of multi-talented crafters. It is a pillowcase dress made Stampin' Up style! The great thing about it is that even though its our holiday colours, this is definitely not a Christmas dress. Here are a couple different tutorials that explain the dress making process.

Accessories and Tools

Blushing Bride 1/2" Stitched-Poly Ribbon
Candy Cane Christmas Designer Fabric: Eight at 5" x 5" and four at 2" x 28"
Candy Cane Big Designer Buttons
Big Shot
Flower Folds Bigz XL Die
Pink and white thread
Pink pillowcase
Pillowcase dress pattern
Safety pin

Instructions

Sew pillowcase dress using pattern of your choice. (We found our pattern on the Internet.)
Make spaghetti straps by running ribbon through front and back casing. Tie front and back ribbons at one shoulder to create a bow.
Make ruffle with four 2" x 28" strips of polka-dot fabric. Gather and sew to pillowcase dress using white thread. Sew ribbon on top of the ruffle.
Using the Flower Folds Bigz XL Die and polka-dot fabric, cut four 2-3/4" flowers and four 3" flowers.
Stack four 2-3/4" flowers and sew down the center of each petal using white thread.
Stack four 3" flowers and sew down the center of each petal using white thread.
Attach button and ribbon to the flower and pin to dress with safety pin.

Art in the Vines Recap

I had a much more successful event the second time around. I had decided to scale back my display a bit, partially because some of my stuff is still packed in a sea of cardboard, as well as fear of rain, but luckily it held off for a very nice day. I also decided not to do a make-and-take, since last time nobody seemed interested other than kids, and I didn't want to spend more supplies than I had to. I guess it was my lucky day, because I had my most successful sales to date! It wasn't a ton of sales, but still enough to make it worth spending my day at the winery... and the yummy sangria by donation didn't hurt either!

Lordy, Lordy... Look Who's Forty!

For my good friend Emma's fortieth birthday, I wanted to make something for her, as well as her regular birthday gift, because I know she appreciates craftiness! I had an inspiration photo saved from somewhere on the internet of a similar idea, just waiting for the chance to make it myself. I got a cute wrought iron and ceramic flower pot from Michaels, plus some rounded flower foam to fit inside the pot. Then I put in 40 different tootsie pops (yes, I counted!) into the foam. Because the foam is rounded, they went into a nice shape pretty easily. Then I printed out "forty sucks!" on white cardstock, cut it in a banner shape, and taped it onto 2 bamboo skewers from the kitchen. The pointy skewers easily stuck down into the foam. Lastly, I tied on some matching ribbon to the base and skewers. A lovely gift for a lovely friend; just make sure your planned recepient has a good sense of humour. I think Emma liked it!

Stamp Club Goodies

My last stamp club meeting for this group was in June, and I am sad its already done! Six months flies by so quickly.

The way our hostess club works is we get together at my place one evening per month for six months, where I provide drinks and snacks and everything for two fun projects. I try to focus on learning interesting new techniques, holiday-related items (depending on the month), and also whatever items or stamp sets my club members are interested in.

The members' agree to purchase a minimum of $35 from the catalogue each month for the six months, and give me the orders the night of our meeting. The best part is that one month out of the six month each member gets a chance to be the "hostess," meaning that you get to pick one free level one hostess set and a minimum of $25 of free stuff from the catalogue! Its a great way to build up your stash of supplies over time, get free stuff without having to hold a home workshop, and learn new craft skills! And... the best part in my opinion... girl time!

I couldn't let our last meeting go by without putting together some special gifts for my members. I decorated some white paper bags, and included a sweet pea fridge magnet, some of my new business cards, a special invite to my Open House, and the best part: a "stuff I made" notebook filled with inspirational quotes and spaces to record all your projects over the years. Draw prize for Art in the Vines

For Art in the Vines you have to donate a raffle prize as the entry fee. The best part is that the raffle is all for charity, as well as the barbeque. I thought you might be interested in seeing what I put together. I was thinking of donating a whole stamp set, but I figured that a gift basket would be more useful for a wider range of crafters, plus it looks cooler! I used up brand new random supplies that I already happened to have on hand, which made it even more cost effective for me. I think it looked cute! I tied it up with clear cellophane and ribbon. Hope the winner enjoyed their prize! Can you spot all the goodies in there? Dont worry, if you want your own super duper prize, come to my Open House! I have tons of prizes and free goodies. Or, you could always come to the next Art in the Vines event in August as well.

Father's Day

This past Father's day was my husband's second. I organised a family bbq in his honour, plus a little gift from Liam. We bought him a Star Wars decal for his tool box, plus a gift certificate for a dinner at the Keg. I also made a really really yummy dessert for the first time: death by chocolate trifle. I baked brownies in the morning, then in the afternoon I layered together in a big bowl: brownie chunks with cold strong coffee and some kaluha, cool whip, skor bar chunks, caramel sauce, then repeat! For the piece de resistance I added store bought chocolate dipped cream puffs on top. Dessert fit for a king! (Or a great Dad).

I wanted to show you the cool card I whipped up while the brownies were baking. I loosely followed the directions from here. Cute idea, eh?

Colour Renovation Kits

Have you checked out the new Catalogue yet? You probably noticed the new colour renovation and in-colours. No wait, its Canada day, not catty day, but either way I am excited. I will be enjoyed Canada with my family at our local celebrations, but I doubt the baby and I will be awake long enough for the fireworks! That's okay though, because its the junk food and party atmosphere that I enjoy the most. Let's just hope its sunny, since we have had such a slooooow start to our Summer. Art in the Vines is over... for 2 months!

Yesterday I got to sit outside all day at Township 7 winery with a wine glass in my hand, enjoying a great acoustic trio. It was the fourth annual Art in the Vines art and craft sale, although apparently the most popular booths were the ones with food!! I especially loved the freshly made kettle corn. There was a bbq for charity as well. Unfortunately I hardly sold any of my faaaaabulous crafts, but thats their loss! It wasn't just me, apparently most of the vendors I talked to didn't do too well either, but it was still a lovely day! I was especially happy with my new tent, because they was my first outside event!

I had one large table with my crafts set up, then a smaller table with a free make-and-take card with the Big Shot. It was pretty popular, especially with the kids! It was nice because it drew people in, and also gave me something to do! I set up two "clothes lines" on one side of the tent, to hang my baby taggie toys on one line, and more cards on another. I got to use my new banners and business cards too, which was fun.

Who Let the Dogs Out??

I was asked by my friend Miriam to help out with her son's doggie-themed second birthday, so I made up some favours and thank you cards for her. I used the mini milk carton XL die in my Big Shot to make doghouse shaped favour boxes. I layered a scalloped border piece of cardstock over the top of the milk carton, but made sure to leave the bottom open to take the goodies in and out. Miriam is a crafter extraordinaire, and I couldn't get over her beautiful doggie cupcakes, so I had to include a photo. She is so creative!

Springtime Explosion Box

In honour of May being International Scrapbooking Month, I decided to do a mini scrapbook project for our club meeting. I love making explosion boxes, and I wanted to feature our cool new bird punch in a spring version.

We used the Tea Party designer paper for the box top, Chocolate Chip card stock for the base, and Old Olive for the inserts. We ran the Old Olive pieces through the Big Shot die cutting machine to emboss a swirly bird design on the paper.

Now small photos can be added to the squares, little love notes, or be just left plain. A couple chocolates or a small gift (jewellery!) can be given in the box or it can be used as an extra fancy card for special occasions.

The bird punch is super simple to use, with one punch out in yellow and one in green for the branch, then attached with dimensionals. We sponged the edges for some extra oomph. Cute!

Mooooving and Shaking, baby!

There is a really cool XL die cut called "movers and shapers" that you can get for the Big Shot. It cuts the paper for you into a card for you, with a folding line through the middle... but the best part is that you can cut a peek-a-boo shape in any position on the front of the card, so you can see through into the inside of the card when its folded. The magnet shapes can go anywhere on the front, but I think it looks nicest in the bottom corner. The shapes are a smidgen bigger than the same shaped punch, so they can be perfectly layered. We used the oval punch, and the scalloped oval punch, in conjunction with the "oval all" stamp set. I love how it all goes together so perfectly. Its a fast way to make cards with a real wow factor, and is especially great when you are making multiples at the same time.
